boot up blue screen

We've all seen blue screens of death, they always give some indication of the
error. But now when I boot my XP OS computer up it reaches a blank blue
screen with the mouse arrow in the center after I sign on And it Stays blank.
I can access the hard drive from another computer and can even run a AV scan.
Control/alt/del will provide the usual window and when I click task manager,
it returns to the blank blue screen with the mouse curser in the middle. I
can move the mouse curser at will but there is nothing to click on. One more
thing, when I put the XP cd in and try to do a repair - it can't find the
hard drive. Same thing when I try to do an install. It would be good if
someone has the answer for what to do.

Boot to setup CD, and press 'r' for Recovery Console prompt. Type:

CHKDSK /R
