boot scan disk problem

Last night when I turned on my PC runnig Windows XP, automatic scan disk
runned at boot on hard drive D:
It didn't however run in the common way - instead of scanning it started
converting some folders into files on the selected drive. Hopefully I didn't
wait for the whole process to be completed. Now the former folders have the
same names but are no longer visible as folders but as files with no
extension and size of exactly 32 KB. When I restarted my PC the scan disk
process started again. I ran virus checks on all hard drives (supposing this
might be it) but with no result. I also check on the Internet for description
of some viruses with such effects but also with no result.
If anyone had encountered this issue please let me know even if the
resolution is with minimum effect! Thanks in advance!

chkdsk is doing what it should. You have a corrupt set of files and folders,
and chkdsk is trying to save the partition from total corruoption. Your hard
drive is probably going out.
