Would this message perhaps read "Inaccessible boot device"?
If so, what is the recent history of the machine? Any hardware
changes? Software changes?

About her data: Has she considered backing up any of it
while the going was good? Do you have access to another
PC? Do you have your Win2000 installation CD handy?

The error message may have been inaccessible boot device. She is at school & I don't have her laptop. I think the message appeared after she tried to install new printer software & failed. Yes, we have other PC's available for use & she has the Windows 2000 CD.

Press F8 during the boot phase, then select Safe Mode. You should then
uninstall the new printer driver.

I'm not sure if the printer driver was ever installed. The computer couldn't find the hardware, so there was some setup problem there.

Was wondering.....could we create a new boot record on a floppy on another computer & then try to boot it with that?

You can try but I doubt that it will make a difference.

- Format a floppy disk on some other Win2000 PC.
Don't do it on a Win9x PC - it won't work.
- Copy these files from the \i386 folder of your Win2000 CD
to A:\
ntldr
ntdetect.com
- Create a file a:\boot.ini with these lines
[Boot Loader]
Timeout=3
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect
- Boot the machine with this floppy

Thank you for your input. I'll pass it along to her. She was planning to talk to Microsoft Technical Support when she got home from work.
