Boot Problem

Hi I had a problem with the OS and repaired succesfully(?) with WIN XP using
the
CD Installation disc. Now my computer will not Boot up in Win XP. It gets to
the Windows Home page and reboots. It will not enter Safemode either. The
disc checks out ok and the same problem appears in another computer using the
same disc, and in the other computer you can see all files except where the
security was at the Administrator level.
Win XP says there isn't a problem with the disc so please can somebody tell
me why it will not boot up correctly? I have made a chkdsk c: /R it repaired
some errors but keeps rebooting. Can I turn off Auto Reboot outside of
windows?

If it will not enter safe mode, it is not repaired. Did you run a Repair
after the successful chkdsk? If so, you probably have a damaged hard drive.

Maybe it isn't dead yet as I can see it fully on another computer. Maybe I
will rebuild the computer with a new drive then use this a slave and try to
get the files off that I want.
I had SP2 loaded should I repair using SP2?

If your system was original with no SP2, take it out with add/remove, run the
repair, and reinstall sp2.

Bernie:
Do the following in the order given...

1. Reconnect that problem HDD as a secondary HDD in another machine and copy
off whatever files are important to you. On the other hand, if you already
have a current backup of the drive, that's fine.

2. Download the HDD diagnostic utility from the web site of the
manufacturer of your HDD and check it out. It's possible you may be dealing
with a defective disk so it's something you should know about,
notwithstanding that you're able to access its data.

3. Run a Repair install and hope for the best. You'll use your XP
installation CD with SP2 to do so. I don't quite understand Mark's last
comment about "tak(ing) it out with add/remove, run the repair, and
reinstall sp2". Since you apparently have an XP installation CD with SP2,
that's all that's necessary to run the Repair. I assume you know how to do
this. If not, there are a number of websites that contain step-by-step
instructions for undertaking a Repair install. If you do a Google search on
"XP repair install", you'll be pointed to many of these sites. Here are a
few...

http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm

Assuming the Repair install is successful, you should use your A-V program
to immediately check out your PC for any virus infestation. Also, you will
need to download/install *all* the MS critical updates since SP2. (Again,
I'm assuming that you'll be undertaking the Repair install with a XP CD that
contains SP2).

Hi Bernie,

Do you have more than one partition on your current Hard Drive? If you
do, you could use Acronis True Image 10 Home Retail CD and back up your data
files onto the other partition, then you can reformat and reinstall Windows
XP.

Once you get the operating system back in working order, created a full
partition image, so you don't need to reinstall Windows XP again, just
restore the Drive Image. Make any sense?

I will not buy this sw but I have the maxtor disc sw to create a partition so
its an option, but I cannot get my user account open to copy the files. I was
the administrator but when I put the disc in another machine I cannot see the
files. How can I overcome this?

Hi Bernie,

You can't from another computer. That's why I recommended Acronis True
Image 10 Home software. The question arises, if the Maxtor Disc Software can
create another partition from the free space left, without destroying the
existing data on the Hard Drive.

Acronis True Image 10 Home from newegg.com and also its Disk Director
Suite 10.0-Retail

The first time you use the software, you need to use it from the CD
itself. You can't install the software onto the computer you are having
problems with. The CDs are bootable and you can run them on the computer you
are having problems with. Make sure the CD is the device that is first in
the Boot order.

When you boot from the CD, the security of Windows XP, does not come
into play.

You may need to buy also, another Hard Drive, if your current Hard Drive
is going bad. Before it goes bad, use Acronis Disk Director to copy the
partition to the other Hard Drive. Do not move it, in case something goes
wrong. COPY.

Free evalutation of "Acronis True Image 10 Home " is available for a 15 day
trial??
OK.
I load my disc into another machine?
I download the s/w onto a CD?
I boot with this CD then transfer the files to the other disc?
I don't care about the disc being defunk but there was no sign that this was
going to happen AND the disc checks out ok so all I want is the files. Then
I'll reformat and see if its the disc or buy another drive, probably the
latter.
Should the trial version work to do what I want? I did try taking ownership
last week but had problems as I guess the disc was a slave and not master.
Being cool about this but I really MUST backup the files that I want to keep
just never do and so sign of the death clicking from the drive either!!
