Boot problem track-down...

I'm trying to TS a boot issue with an ATI video card using WinXP.

What methods are available to get WinXP to reveal *everything*, verbose,
about what is going on during startup.

msconfig --> boot.ini --> /sos is a joke and reveals next to nothing.

Everything is fresh and current. Its not hardware related either as the
card is working beautifully under Linux using ATI proprietary drivers.

(ATI support is a joke. I've already exhausted everything available with
them.)
 
But you don't say "what" the boot issue is... does it blue screen... does it
sit there at the splash screen.... does it yell obsenities at you? If you
provide more information, perhaps someone here can help you.

It locks up (black screens) after the WinXP splash scroller.
 
I've exhausted all the obvious approaches on resolving this video problem
with XP.

Drivers are fresh and current on a fresh XP install, BIOS settings are where
they need be, driver settings are where they need be, XP settings are where
they need be.

Hardware is fine. The card runs perfectly, accellerated with all features
working, under Linux using ATI's proprietary drivers.

The only way to resolve this is to carefully analyze and scrutinize
everything going on at boot. Event log reveals nothing. Msconfig -->
boot.ini --> /SOS reveals nothing. Bootlog reveals nothing.

I need a method to make XP verbose about *everything* it is doing during
bootup...
 
Found what I need.

/BOOTLOG

Saves to: \windows\Ntbtlog.txt

(Real-time verbose would be nicer, but I'll take this.)

Its the infamous agp440.sys XP problem.
(Yes, I do have the latest BIOS for my m/b)

Nevermind. Agp440.sys may not have jackshit to do with anything.

I suspected it for a minute because it was shown as the last thing
loaded --- but thats because safe mode OVERWRITES the damn boot log! (Thats
normal behavior for safe mode: agp440.sys to be last thing loaded.)
