WinXP will not shut down

Windows XP hangs during shut down. After saving configuration and playing
the shutdown wav it just stops responding. This is a clean install on a
Gigabyte GA-7N400 motherboard with an ATI 9250 128 meg video card. The only
non-windows software installed is Norton Antivirus.

Here's what I've done to try resolving the problem.
1. Booted into safe mode and confirmed that it would shut down from this
mode.
2. Used msconfig to disable all services and start items, restarted and
tried to shut down. No luck.
3. Used Device Manger tried to update the driver for everything on the
device list. No luck.
4. Uninstalled Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition 10.1, restarted and tried
to shut down. No luck.
5. Did a Google search for similar problems, but nothing seems to help.
6. Updated my video card driver. No help.
7. Updated from SP2 to SP3. No help.

Any help would be appreciated. Don

Usually a failed shutdown is caused by a hardware conflict, try uninstalling
add-ons (one at a time),see if it solves the issue. You might also chk the
power
configuration settings in the BIOS,most pcs have a power on/off button
selection menu. Also,a unresponsive process might be the cause,to chk,go to
run,type:regedit Expand:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\controlpanel\open desktop.
Locate & L.click AutoEndTasks Go to edit,modify,set to 1 from 0,close out
regedit. This works just fine in xp,however its band-aiding the problem
process.

Shutdown is normal when in WinXP Safe Mode. This should eliminate problems
in the BIOS. I tried the registry change suggested and WinXP still would
not shut down. Thanks for the suggestions.

The UPHCleaner appears to be a part of the SP3 upgrade. I found it in
program files and ran it several times. No help. The other link to
shutdown problems didn't seem to apply to my situation. I'm still hoping
for a solution to this problem. My ID guys at work suggest a complete
reinstall of WinXP. Seems like a lot of work for such a simple problem.
There must be a better way. Thanks for the suggestions.

If you installed the ATI Control Panel (or whatever they call it), uninstall
it and see what happens. This is separate from the drivers.

I reinstalled winxp, several times and instead of loading all the drivers
from the nVidia nForce2 utilities cd. that came with my motherboard, I only
loaded the network card driver so I could get onto the internet. Then I
upgraded to SP2 and loaded all the drivers from winxp instead of the nVidia
cd. That seems to have fixed the problem. I had forgotten about loading
the ATI Drives from the cd they provided. I suspect you are correct about
the ATI Control Panel. Sure wish there was an option in winxp to see each
process being executed during start and stop. That would have been a big
help. As it is, I'm left to guess what caused the system to hang during
shutdown.
Thanks for the help. Next time, I'll be more careful installing drivers.
