I cannot do any of the subject items. I can't get into
safe mode--f8 continuously--boot from cd or restore to
another time. All of these fail everytime. There must
be someway to set xp home up to do these things. Any
thoughts on it? Thanks.

Hi Carol,

To force a Safe mode boot from normal mode, start/run msconfig and go to the
boot.ini tab, click "safeboot" under the options.

Instead of hitting F8, try depressing and holding hthe <ctrl> key as soon as
the POST ends and before Windows begins to load.

Booting from the CD is accomplished by setting the system BIOS boot order
for it to load first, then inserting hte CD before restarting the system.

Hi, Carol.

Another way is to edit C:\boot.ini to add a line for Safe Mode and make it
the default. To add the line, just copy your normal WinXP line (starting
with "multi(0)") and add the /safeboot:minimal switch. (The full Table
28.18 showing all the boot.ini parameters is on pages 1291-92 in my WinXP
Pro Resource Kit book, but I can't find how to navigate to that page in the
online version of the RK, but you can get close at:
