Boot Delayed!!!!!

When booting my XP machine it loads for a while then
quietens down. After 5 seconds or so the hard drive works
hard again loading drivers or whatever. This goes on for
a minute or two and then I hear my scanner drivers being
loaded. Why does my scanner sound so long after I boot?
Any way I can speed this process up? I've disabled
everything in MSCONFIG.
