I am trying to repair and cleanup a friends Dell computer
that is running XP Home. After talking with her, I found
out she got caught up in the virus infected bogus e-
mailed Microsoft updates and install several of them that
were e-mailed in October and November. I searched all
about and can't find the removal tools. Where, or how
can I remove these bogus updates.

TIA

Charlie

There are more than a few viruses and worms that were distributed by email
with subject headers saying they were Microsoft Updates, often Microsoft
Security Updates. As we all should now know, Microsoft does not email
updates. That said, since the infections could be caused by one or more of
many viruses or worms, there isn't an easy fix. You'd have to know the
names of the viruses or worms to download the correct removal tools. I know
that you want help, and the above isn't of much help. You have a few
alternatives. You could install a good antivirus program, update its
definitions, and then scan your drive (all files, not just program files)
and see what it comes up with, and then download the correct removal tools
(if the antivirus program alone can't do All the clean up required). But,
if you're infected with something that effects your internet connection to
antivirus software sites, or the ability to update antivirus program
definitions, then the above isn't an option. Then I'd suggest doing a clean
install of Windows XP, and your other programs. Then install an antivirus
program, and the first time you connect to the internet do a live update of
the antivirus definitions. After that NEVER open an unsolicited email
unless you read the message source code first. and know that nothing harmful
is included. Also if you use Outlook Express, turn off the Preview Pane,
because it's the same as opening a message, and some HTML/Rich Text messages
can be harmful (View/Layout/ click to remove the checkmark to the left of
Show Preview Pane).

Start by updating her virus definitions and then run a full system scan.
Note any viruses/trojans found and check for details on them at the AV
manufacturer's support site.
