.bmp instead of .jpg?

I know this is an utterly basic question, but now that I have the problem, I
have long since forgotten the solution. My downloaded .jpg files will only
save as .bmp. I need to edit the downloads, so I need .jpg. What do I do?

PS: Could this be due to my gigantic screensaver file?

That happens when the Temporary Internet Files are too full. In IE click
Tools | Internet Options. Click Delete Files in the Temporary Internet
files section of the General tab. On the next window place a check mark in
the box to Delete all offline content.

If that doesn't fix it, go to Tools | Internet Options | Advanced and scroll
down to the Security section. Uncheck "Do not save encrypted pages to
disk".

Click Start/Run and type this command to fix the 'Content Type' settings:

regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll
(and/or)
regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll (for WinXP)

Open the file in an application that will view BMP files (most do but some
may not) and save it as a JPG. Then edit away!!

Have fun.

Thank you. The Temp files deleted for over 10 minutes. Now everything is
back to normal.

Open the file in Microsoft Picture Manager and then File, Export

You can then export the file as any pix format you want!

The user would need MS Office 2003 to do that.

Besides, it would be much easier to clear out the excess ftemporary internet
files, then select the bmp extension file, right click, choose 'change name'
and change the extension to jpg. Repeat as needed.
