"Blue screen" when "Automatic Updates" service is running

My question involves WinXP Home w/SP2 installed. I'm trying to help a friend
with his computer. After much spyware, adware, and virus scanning, his
computer still shuts down to the infamous "blue screen" UNLESS Windows
Automatic Update Service is unchecked in "Services" using msconfig.

If I start Windows with the Automatic Update Service turned off, then turn
it on manually, the computer will "blue screen" in short order.

I have tried reinstalling SP2 from a MS CD, but the problem persists.

Is there a way to do a "repair install" of WinXP Home? Is that likely to
solve this problem? Obviously, I'm trying REALLY hard to avoid a complete
reformat at this time.

Thanks to any and all for your help.

You need to post a copy of the error report.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click
on the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties,
Advanced, Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck
box before Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

Induce a"blue screen" in the way you described and let's find out
what's going on.

You will also find reports on Stop Error incidents in the System Log
Event Viewer.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

Was there any file mentioned after the Stop Error code?

I think I would check for current third party drivers relating to your
motherboard and whether there is a BIOS update. To do this we need the
make and model of your motherboard and the date of your BIOS

This freeware programme is excellent for getting information
about your computer:
Everest Home Edition (freeware)
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Tip: To copy select Report, Quick Report, Plain Text, highlight
required text, right click and select copy. However, whilst this is
fine for posting small amounts of information into newsgroup
messages longer reports will irritate other newsgroup subscribers.

It would also help to know the make and model of your computer. Also
the actual version of Windows XP i.e. Home Edition or ?.

Gerry,

Thanks very much for your help and direction. I followed your links and
downloaded the Everest program. Very informative. I also ran the WMI
diagnostic program and there were MANY problems. To answer your question, no
there was no file mentioned after the Stop Error code.

But.....

Long story short, I was able to initiate a repair install of WinXP (Home,
btw, as stated in the first post) and everything is looking good so far. I'm
installing SP2 even as I type this (different computer) and that also is
going well.

So I've got my fingers, toes, legs, and eyes crossed - just maybe this will
do the trick. :)

Again - thanks for your help.
