Blue Screen on Startup

A while back I got a blue screen moments after the Windows XP splash screen
appeared during startup. the system reboots but just blue screens over and
over again. I found I can start in safe mode but a normal restart gets me
another blue screen. I then discovered that if i schedule a Check Disk the
system will run it reboot then start normally. I cannot restore or repair
Windows (I got a restore CD from Toshiba but can only wipe and reinstall
completely-not willing to just yet). Can anyone please tell me what might be
wrong that it only starts after a Check Disk?

What error is shown when you get the blue screen. It would be very helpful if you post the error stated per verbatim. Aside from that what you are describing sounds like a bad driver for something. If there is no problem booting inSafe Mode that it is most likely a driver issue. That is why we need the error message

Sorry at the time I didn't have it written down. Oddly enough I get two
errors that basically alternate:

0x0000007F (0x00000008 0xF7727D70 0x00000000 0x00000000)
or
0x0000007F (0x80042000 oxf7727D70 0x00000000 0x00000000)

Drew, I researched your Stop Error here:
http://www.aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm

which lead me to a rather old MSDN article here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/w2kmsgs/1123.asp

Googling for the Stop Error doesn't bring me anything definitive, but if I
were troubleshooting the machine here in the shop I would run some hardware
diagnostics, starting with the hard drive (since you say running Chkdsk
affects the problem) and then testing the RAM next. Here are some general
hardware troubleshooting steps:

If the hardware passes the diagnostics, then much as you don't want to I
think the next step is to restore to factory condition. If the problems
continue immediately after that restoration, you will know the issue is
most probably a hardware one. Whatever you decide to do, back up your data
immediately.

Go to the hard drive manufacturer's web site and download their free
diagnostic test utility. Run this to check out the drive for
possible hardware problems.

Good luck
