Blue Screen on start up

I would appreciate any help on the following subject. My daughter's desk top
PC was recently rebooted and will only go as far as the word "compaq" and
then she gets a blue screen. I was able to boot to safe mode once but then it
too went to the blue screen,
She is running XP Home edition. I was going to reboot up her computer with
Windows XP Office in the drive. I am concerned that in doing so i might erase
all of the information she has stored in her art files and word/works docs.
(she never listens when i ask her to back up her files) Is this even
posssible? I just wanted to check before doing so. Thank you in advance. Is
there a better solution?

You can try a repair install. Microsoft Office in the drive won't do
anything to anything.

Joe,
Could you explain please? Do you mean that would not fix the problem or that
would not cause her material to be deleted/lost? What is a repair install?
Thanks

Microsoft Office can only be installed after Windows has booted so booting
with the Microsoft Office CD in the drive not only won't harm anything, it
won't do anything at all. Did you mean the Microsoft Windows CD?
A repair install is something that you do when you think your current
installation has become corrupt. From what you've told me you are more
likely having some sort of hardware problem than a software problem but you
can try a repair install anyway because a repair install won't harm any of
your files. You can read how to perform a repair install here -->
