Windows Stalls On The Blue "Windows XP" Screen

Hi, I'm trying to get a sony viao laptop to start after xp service pack 2 has
been installed. My friend said it was acting funny after her bro went on a
web site, garageband.com. It was after this that she tried installing sp2.
Anyway the system will boot to the blue xp screen, not the log in screen and
no further. Here it just hangs and doesn't go on. It also does the same
thing in safe mode. I'll get the option to start in safe mode and it will
appear to continue loading but stop at the blue xp screen. I strongly
suspect that her hard drive has filled up and just won't go any further,
however I can't get into in to get any of her current information. She said
if I needed to I can erase the disk and reinstall everything over again but
she can't find her original disk.
Specs are: sony viao laptop, 1 gig ram, 20 gig hard drive, I think a pIII

Thank you much.

Regards
Nightngal

Try tapping F8 on next Startup and see if you can get into Safe Mode. If
yes, go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>
System Tools>System Restore. Give that a try.
