I downloaded service pack 2 on 08-25-04. It did something
to my Norton AntiVirus 2004 stop getting updates. After
that I keep getting blue death screen on shut down it
said that is a hardware or software problem. I repaired
XP pro through the cd Xp upgrade disk. Computer went back
to service pack 1 still having problems computer starts
up slow about a minute and 45 seconds before desktop
comes up Have four web ads popup on desktop. Should I
wipe C drive and reload windows Xp Pro. Before i
downloaded service pack 2 computer ran great. Any help
would be great.

Sounds like you might not have cleaned the spy/ad ware
off the computer before applying the SP

Try cleaning with ad-aware / spybot SD etc and see how it
behaves.

if you still have problems after a repair, i would
suggest, delete\recreate partitions\format clean install
of XP.

then:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx

note: CLOSE ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.

Turn off antivirus programs completely during the service
pack install as well as any other software program that
runs in the background that is not part of the OS
(firewalls, popupstoppers, messengers, mechanic programs,
etc). don't disable it, turn it off.

antivirus = Protects the OS files and settings from being
changed or modified.

servicepack = Changes and modifies the OS files and
settings.

having both programs running at the same time will cause
similar problems that you have discribed.

Because it shows a blue screen...

Just a blank blue screen with no information whatever on it? That is
rather unusual, even for a computer that has been infested with Norton
products.
