Blue Screen of death - and useless restore points

I've been getting sporadic blue screens of death since february, I thought it
might be connected to the logitech mouse and/or the Civ IV that I loaded -
both of which would hang after a certain amount of time. My computer is a 1
year old medion with 3.0+ mhz so not a crappy machine. Anyway I uninstalled
what I thought may have causeed the issue (after trying to remedy the
situation by updating drivers for themonitor, video card, etc etc) Nothing
really helps and i'm still getting the errors and although microsoft likes to
report each of these for me they have spectacularly failed to find any
solution for me. Today I decided to restore from prior to installing the
possibly responsible software, so I tried to impleemnt system restore. It
lets me pick any restore point I choose, but then every time it fails to
actually restore telling me "no changes made to your computer - unable to
restore from this restore point - choose another." I've chosen about 5 now
and the same message for each of them - what is the point of a system restore
option if it never restores, the time when you need it! seems a waste of hard
disk space to me. what are my options - Microsoft won't give me free support
- and say i have to get it from the people ipurchsed the computer from. While
i wait for them to get back to me i thought i'd pick the excellent brains in
here! regards mel morris

We need the STOP code (0x000...) or the name of the error (LOOKS_LIKE_THIS)
to help you.

1. In order to help you with the blue screen errors we need for you
to provide the details of those errors, especially any STOP codes
reported, all 4 parameters for these stop codes and any file or module
names mentioned.

2. Unfortunately there is no known means by which the existing
restore points can be salvaged when System Restore malfunctions as
your has. All that can be done is to clean out the restore archives
and start over with a new set of restore points. The normal method
for doing this is to turn off System Restore (Control Panel - System -
System Restore), reboot the computer, and turn System Restore back on
again.

Once this has been done you should test System Restore as follows:
1. Create a new desktop shortcut (to anything)
2. Create a new manual system restore point and name it Test or
similar.
3. Delete the shortcut you created in step 1.
4. Reboot the computer.
5. Run System Restore and choose the Test restore point you created
in step 2.

Your deleted shortcut should reappear on the desktop.

System Restore web pages at http://bertk.mvps.org/index.html

Good luck

Thanks Ron, I'll look out for the stop codes next time it happens.

As to the System restore - I didn't know it had got corrupted so that means
it's pretty useless. I'll delete all the old ones and start again for hte
future.

Thanks for the helpful hints
