Knack
Unless he has a parallel WinNT/2000/XP OS I think he needs to run the
command chkdsk /F from the Recovery Console via the WinXP setup CD. However,
if he has only a set of OEM System Recovery CDs instead of a Microsoft WinXP
CD, then he won't have a Recovery Console to work with. Furthermore, he must
already have an Administrator password entered in his WinXP setup in order
for the Recovery Console to access it.
If the system partition is formatted as FAT (doubtful) then chkdsk /F can be
run on it via a DOS 6.22 boot diskette, which can be downloaded free of
charge from www.bootdisk.com.
I know that the DOS version of utilities such as Partition Magic do HDD
error corrections before making changes to partitions. I don't know how, but
somehow the PM version that runs off a DOS boot diskette is able to fix
errors on NTFS partitions.
