Blue Screen 3B when Switching Users - ATI X1650

[Guest]

So I hook up my 2nd Monitor on my ATI
X1650 that came with the machine. I then go to Switch Users, and wham. Blue
Screen. Reboot and it says if has a solution to the issue. INstall the
latest ATI Software. I did. It still happens.

What next?

Scooter,

Did you follow the ATI instructions for installing drivers? They require
steps such as removing the prior drivers before installing and setting the
screen resolution to standard VGA. The instructions must be followed. Just
a thought, because it's easy to overlook them.

HMmm.. Were those instructions on the ATI Installer? I clicked update. It
jsut went about its merry way. It did ask that I close other Apps.

I'll try the re-uninstall. )-; All the versions seem to be Current.

Lets clarify to ensure we're not having a communications breakdown. I'm
assuming the latest ATI driver is Catalyst 7.4 (I guess that's the
latest-whatever) for Vista. You download it from the AMD/ATI website. The
website includes instructions for installing the drivers. You have to look
for them, but sometimes the driver download also includes the instructions,
but you still have to look for them.

So, how did you update? You could be getting the Microsoft update drivers.
I don't know whether those are the same. That's my clarification.
Communications is not easy.

So when after downloading the 7.4 Drivers. and clicking Run, as MS's Solution
said. The ATI Installer came up. It had, Install, Update or Uninstall.

I chose Update, Custom, clicked everything, Rebooted, no go.
I chose Install, Custom, clicked everything, Rebooted, no go.
I chose Install, Express, Rebooted, no go.

After your message I went to 800x600, could not see the buttons at the
bottom of the installer. Managed to uninstall the ATI Software. Rebooted,
then did a Install, Custom, clicked everything, Rebooted, Whala...

I can switch Users.

You did it! It's important to uninstall, for some reason. I wonder why the
installer doesn't just go ahead and do it automatically, since it's so
critical. It asks the user what he wants to do. Most have no clue as to
what the proper procedure is. Go figure.

Reducing resolution to standard VGA (640 X 480) has also always been
critical, but you managed to get the job done at 800 X 600, not standard VGA.
Could ATI have changed the procedure in this regard? Anyone know? If they
did, all the better. It's sure hard to see the buttons on the bottom of the
screen at 640 X 480. I've pulled my hair out many time over that problem.
You have to click on something which is outside the screen! Go figure!
