Blocked website

Hello, I'm trying to get onto a site, and whenever I happen to type in the
word, whether it be in a search bar or actually typing the website into the
address bar, I get a "this page cannot be displayed" page. I'm not sure why.
I don't think it's blocked on my computer but i don't know how to check. i've
checked the "protected/trusted" sites in internet options after clicking on
tools and i kow that it's not that. I'm using windows XP. the site is
actually a heavy-visited site, and i'm wondering if it's just the servers
that aren't handling all of the people trying to get onto the site though,
that does not explain why i cannot type it into search bars without getting
the error screen. can anyone shed any light on this confusing topic?

Hi,
To check the HOSTS file in Windows XP...
Make sure that Windows is showing hidden files and is
not hiding file extensions for known file types (Control Panel> Folder
Options> View) then check for a HOSTS file at
[C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc] Open the HOSTS file with notepad. If there
are entries you wish to disable, you can put the pound sign (#) in front an
entry to disable it. Then File> Save. Or you can rename the HOSTS file to
HOSTS.OLD to disable it.

Example...
127.0.0.1 adserver.com
That entry blocks adserver.com. This computer cannot connect to
adserver.com.

More on the HOSTS file at http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Hope this helps,

Thank you Don, that was helpful and you gave a really good explaination of
how to edit your hosts. Unfortunately it's still not working after i went
through and checked the host files, everything is fine and clear. I can't
access myspace.com or AOL.com, and there could be other websites I can't
access as well that I'm just not aware of.
