Tools | Options | Security
Uncheck "Block images and other external content in HTML e-mail".

Does the size of the message indicates that there is actually an attachment
there? Sometimes, for one reason or another, the image is not actually sent
with the message, just a reference to it on the sender's hard drive.

No there isn't an attachment!! Any idea why the photos don't open in the
right places in the email?? Thanks

Because the sender didn't include it for one reason or another. If they are
using WinMail or Outlook Express a common reason would be having the choice
to include poctures unchecked in Tools | Options | Send | HYML Settings.

I am also getting problems with the red X's in Windows Mail. It only happens
with emails from www.auctionsniper.com which have thumbnail images of ebay
items. For the past few weeks this has stopped working properly. I have asked
Auctionsniper for advice and they say it is with my email program where the
problem lies because they can see the images in the emails I returned to them.

I have read through many similar 'red X' threads here and have unchecked
Tools/Options/Security/Do not allow attachments; and also Block images. = no
joy.

I have uninstalled AVG8. Now using Avast. Still I get the red X's.
Rebooted. Still I get the red X's.
I then stopped it scanning email. = Still I get the red X's.

What I have noticed is that in Windows Mail/Tools/Options/Security, when I
click in the check box for Block images (I know it should be unchecked for
unblock images), I expect the Apply button to turn from greyed out to black
text. But this does not happen. It's as if there is a problem in Windows Mail
with it not realising that I have actually clicked that particular check box.
All the other check boxes do turn the Apply text black. Is it corrupted? Is
it permanently blocking images in html emails?

My Firewall is ZoneAlarm 7.1.248.000 and I have told it to accept
www.Auctionsniper.com as safe.

In Windows Mail I have looked at Tools/Junk Mail/Safe senders & Blocked
senders lists. I have the Auctionsniper email as a safe sender and it isn't
in the Blocked senders list either.

I have emptied the MSIE 7 cache.

Windows Mail does have a lot of emails in the inbox, 11,750. And 4600 in the
outbox. Has this popped it? I have just compacted the emails. No joy.

Nothing has helped. I am now totally stumped as to why this has stopped
working correctly. Please can you help Frank?

"emails in the inbox, 11,750. And 4600 in the outbox"

It's probably time to do some housekeeping! There should not be any emails
in the Outbox, perhaps you meant the Sent Items folder?
The purpose of the Inbox is to hold newly arrived messages. Once you have read
a message, it should be disposed of in some way (either deleted, or moved to
a storage folder), or else you wind up with an unmanageable glut of messages
in the Inbox, which is likely to hinder the proper operation of WM.

It is possible that the images from www.auctionsniper.com are using some sort
of script coding. If so, go to Tools, Options, Security, under Virus Protection
select the Internet zone.

Hi Gary. Thanks for replying.

My mistake, I did mean 'Sent items' not 'Outbox'.
(I know I have a lot of emails. I like to know where they are and be able to
search throught them easily).

Your suggestion of selecting 'Internet Zone', I have already done so anyway,
but that didn't make a difference.

However, today, for the first time in about a month, I did see just 1
thumbnail image in an emailed list of search results from AuctionSniper. But
funnily enough, it was just 1 image. All the others on the emailed list were
red X's apart from just this one halfway down the list! I'm even more puzzled
now! So I have asked Auctionsniper to see if there is anything different with
this.

I might get my ISP's webmail to save a copy of new emails and see if the
thumbnails show up there.

Once a week, Microsoft sends me an HTML newsletter. Invariably,
one or more of the images in that message show only as a red X.
I suspect that it has something to do with the security settings in
my Internet Explorer, but I haven't been motivated enough to
troubleshoot it. :)
