Blew my ONE SHOT at installation????

Meritt

I got a Sony DSC-P92 Digital Camera. The instructions
were a bit confusing and basically I didn't have the
camera set to PTP when I FIRST used it to plug into the
computer and Windows XP Wizard didn't recognize it and
wouldn't install it (as it was supposed to as it's a plug
and play).

I've been working on this for about 8 hours now and from
what I can find online, sometimes you get ONE SHOT on
installs. Then the computer remembers the failed device
and will not give you a second shot to install it.

So am I left with a brand new camera I can never use!???

How can I bypass Windows XP memory as a failed device and
get it to recognize it as a newcomer and run the wizard?
*** When I manually run the wizard to install a new
device, Sony IS NOT LISTED in the list and gives no
option to type it in. The AUTO RUN WIZARD is the ONLY
WAY to install this Sony camera.

HOW CAN I GET WINDOWS XP TO RECOGNIZE THIS AS A NEW
DEVICE AND RUN THE AUTO PLAY WIZARD?

thanks!

Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager

Look for items with a question mark that have not been installed. Remove
them and the Right click on the very first item which is your Computer name
and select the Scan for new hardware from there. If you already tried this
approach then that is all I can help you with.

Hi Meritt -

Check in Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs. If an entry appears in the
programs list for your camera driver, uninstall it.

Otherwise you'll have to manually locate and remove the hardware information
file for your camera in order for Windows New Hardware Wizard to redetect it
from scratch.

First you must have hidden files and folders set to display. In order to do
this, go into Control Panel. If you have Category View enabled, click on
Appearance and View and then click on Folder Options. If you have Classic
View enabled, click on Folder options. Within Folder Options, click on the
View tab. Under Hidden files and folders, click on the Show hidden files
and folders radio button and then click on Apply then OK.

Then click on Search option in your start menu. Click on Files or Folders.
.. After "all or part of file name" type "*.inf" (without the quotes)
.. After "a word or phrase in the file" type "DSC-P92"
.. After "look in" press the drop down menu and select browse.

Browse to your computer name, C:\Windows (alter if Windows is installed on
another drive on your system) then the Inf subdirectory.

Click the Search button.

After the search completes, right-click on any file that comes up and select
Open from the drop down menu (this opens the file in Notepad). Scroll
through the file and verify that it describes your digital camera (it'll
look like lots of codes and registry settings... but it is readable and you
should be able to determine that the file exactly describes your camera).

Once you've found the xxxxxx.inf file for your camera, rename it to
xxxxxx.OLD (right click on the file name again and select Rename from the
drop down menu).

Exit from the Search window.

If you changed system to view hidden files and folders, undo the step above
where you enabled hidden files and folders to display.

From the documentation that came with your camera, reinstall the driver for
the camera per the instructions that came with it - the Add Hardware Wizard
should properly detect it.

Good luck.

Jef
