digital camera won't isn't recognized

I have XP Home Edition and am trying to upload pictures from my new Sony
DSC-S500 digital camera. Even Sony can't tell me why my OS won't recognize
the camera. I've installed and re-installed the driver that came with the
camera, using their cybershot viewer and all I get is that the hardware is
not working properly because the wizard cannot find the necessary software.
The disk is in the drive and it still can't find it. I've even tried to
upload without the Sony software but I keep getting prompted to install the
driver that came with the device. When I look in Device Manager, there's my
Sony listed under Other and they both have big yellow question marks next to
them. I have 4 USB ports and none of them recognize this Camera. I just
returned a Polaroid with the same problem thinking it was the Polaroid, now
I'm not so sure. Sony thinks it's my OS. Any help would be appreciated as I
think they are right. Don't want to keep returning cameras if i'm going to
get the same problem over and over. Tried installing through "add hardware",
Camera/Scanner Wizard, Sony disk.

A couple of thoughts come to mind. One of the first is how is the
camera being connected to the computer? Via an on-board USB port
or through a hub. Some hubs might need to be powered when connected
to a device such as a camera. Or second, is a USB 2.0 connection
required. being incompatible with USB 1.1? Or third, can the memory
card in the camera be removed and inserted into a card reader for
transfer to the computer, as an alternative?

My Sony works fine on XP Pro, never installed a driver either.. The only time
I had to was on my Win 98se machine.. You should only need the MS signed
disk.sys and PartMgr.sys drivers to see the contents of your memory stick in
the Devices with Removable Storage section in the My Computer window. I have
mine arranged by type and shown in groups.. You will need to use the hardware
wiz to manually select the camera as a Disk drive..
Cheers
