Enable Scan of Hardware You Previously Told the O/S to Ignore

I'm trying to install the SONY USB DVD driver for my DVD Handycam. When I
first plugged in the camera after installing the drivers, Windows XP
recognized the camera as a USB drive, so I thought everything was OK. A
Hardware Found dialog came up, and I mistakenly told XP to cancel. The "Don't
Ask to Install This Again" (paraphrased wording) check box was checked.

I don't know how to get Windows XP to recognize the camera again so I can
install the SONY USB DVD drivers.

Can anyone help?

David, thanks for the response.

The cam is not listed in the Device Manager at all. When I plug in the
camera, the Microsoft USB drivers for a SONY device basically mounts the
camera as a disc drive. I can see the drive in My Computer, can open the
drive, see the files, and play the video files in Windows Media Player. I've
tried unistalling that driver, restarted the computer, and plugged the cam
into the USB port. The same driver is automatically installed. I've also
tried to unistall the SONY software, uninstall the Microsoft USB driver,
restart the computer, install the SONY software, restart the computer, and
plug the cam in. The Microsoft USB driver loads and there is no indication
that new hardware has been connected.

The problem is this: the Picture Package software that comes with the cam
doesn't recognize the disk as a DVD created on the cam. This software enables
me to copy any and/or all video files to my hard disk as mpg files. Without
this, all I have is .VOB files that my editing software does not recognize.

Boot to Safe Mode and remove any/all devices listed that have any relevance to a
USB DVD Cam/drive.
Reboot and reinstall per the manufacturers instructions. You may find reference in
more than one device category, Human Interface Devices will be one.

When I boot into Safe mode there are no drivers to uninstall until I plug the
cam into the USB port. Then I get a DVD drive to uninstall. When I restart
the computer normally and plug in the cam, the DVD drive installs again.

I did, however, figure out what was going on. After I Cancelled the Found
New Hardware Wizard with the check box selected to not ask to install the
driver again, the drivers for the Handycam would not get reset. When I
uninstalled the application, the drivers were not uninstalled. So when I
reinstalled the application, it detected that the drivers were already
installed and left them alone; they remained in the "silent" state.

In order to fix the problem, I had to reinstall the DVD drivers from the
manufacturer's CD. This reset the drivers so that when I plugged the Handycam
into the USB port, it kicked off the Found New Hardware Wizard enabling me to
install the SONY DVD Handycam driver. Problem solved.
