No firewall and no antivirus...and you are "trying to use updates" to get
rid of Blaster...get a clue. The updates will not get rid of Blaster once
you have it.
You need a firewall. You need to install a reputable antivirus programs and
KEEP IT UPDATED. Your computer is certainly infected with much more than
just the BLASTER worm. Until you begin to take basic security precautions,
you are a threat to everyone else on the internet. Every time you turn you
computer on and connect to the internet, your computer is seeking out and
infecting other computers.

I would suggest you turn off your computer and not turn it on again until
you acquire a basic understanding of computer security an your individual
responsibility to take the necessary precautions to protect yourself and to
become a responsible netizen.

Mark,

There are certain understandings one should have when it comes to the
Internet and sercurity but as many, you probably weren't born from the womb
knowing this stuff as the first response suggested you should have been.
Shame on you and everyone else! Damn me too for not being born genious as I
have had my share of problems since I started in this business. All I have
to say is, Bobby, you are one lucky individual for having been born gifted.

As Bobby, the gifted genious, stated in his response to you, the blithering
idiot, you
are a potential threat whenever you log on due to the nature of how some of
these malicious programs work. Microsoft Patches - Hotfixes and Service
Packs - are intended to add additional functionality, patch security
vulnerabilities, and update Windows files that my be error prone. The
patches
are not intended to serve as an antivirus solution but to prevent malicious
code from accessing your Operating System through an unsecured opening or
features built into the operating system that you would otherwise have no
control over.

That being said, here is a proactive approach to your situation, instead of
one that bashes you for being an ignorant son of a bitch:

You, and every one else, needs a nice, simple to use firewall. Try this:
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp
Click the Free Download button. There is lots of info on this site to help
you understand how it works, because, as we all know, according to Bobby,
you are too stupid to know this already. I know I was stupid at first.

Clean your system of viruses:
If you don't have uptodate antivirus installed,
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
If you can get online for a few minutes, try this. You will have to download
a small file for this to work.

NOTE:
It might be in your best interest to disable all background running apps
before you try and do any work. This will terminate some, if not all, errant
programs so you can get your job done. To do this follow these steps:
Click Start/Run and type MSCONFIG.
Press Enter
In the Microsoft Configuration Utility, select the STARTUP tab
Click the button that reads "Disable All"
Go back through the list and enable any thing that references your
antivirus, if any, by clicking to place a check in the box next to the item.
Click OK
Restart

Once you get your act cleaned up and you are a much smarter person, If you
don't have antivirus software, go to Office Depot, Office Max, CompUSA,
Staples or some mom-and-pop shop and pick up Mcafee or Norton Antivirus.
Once installed, it needs to be updated. Keep it updated. Keep background
monitoring enabled, scan your email attachments (usually there is an email
feature that will scan email automatically) and get smarter and smarter. Try
Barnes & Noble, Books A Million, or what ever and look for books to read.
Search GOOGLE.com for info. Hopefully, if there is a next life, you will be
born smarter than you are now. I sure hope I will be.

The updates are preventative, they are not designed to remove Blaster.

Employing common sense precautions isn't really not a matter of
being born "gifted," you know. One would have to have spent his/her
entire "pre-computer" life far beyond the reach of mass media news
outlets (television, magazines, newspapers, even movies, etc.) to
remain ignorant of the potential threats. Given today's
widely-publicized and well-known hostile Internet environment, only a
fool or a masochist would go connect a computer to the Internet
without both a firewall and antivirus protection. Do people really
need to be told not to stick their hands into an open flame?

Last I heard this was a trial and error kind of life. If it takes placing
your hand into a flame to only find it hurts and causes damage and to learn
not to do it again, so be it. Besides, the inadvertent affects of a novice
logging on to the Internet with an infected system is not as obvious as
"sticking your hand in a flame". C'mon. You obviously didn't catch the
sarcasm. If someone doesn't know, you inform them, help them understand.
Does that make sense?? Did you stop to think maybe the guy is young? Maybe
he doesn't watch the news. Maybe this is his first computer. There is a
certain amount of knowledge to be attained from day to day use of the
Internet that isn't inheritantly known from the beginning. And maybe he is
intermediate user, or an advanced user. If that's the case, yes, he is an
idiot and a fool.
