BLANK SCREEN (wallpaper OK) after boot. No START, no icons.Mouse/K

I am using Win XP SP3. This problem is happening more often lately. When it
does occur, it's from a cold boot. I use my login and the screen comes up
with just the wallpaper. The mouse works. The keyboard works. I can get Task
Manager by CTRL-ALT-DELETE, which I use to restart the PC. When I restart,
the PC comes up fine. The PC seems to think it's running fine.
Another thing I can report that's happening is Windows Explorer has been
crashing on me too. Not often. But I'll get a message saying Windows
Explorer was shut down to protect the computer. Is this related? (Yeah, I
still like using Win Explorer.) May or may not be related.
Finally, MS Update #KB960859 keeps "installing". It seems to happen once
a day. Related problem? Symptom?

(It took me FOREVER to find out somewhere I could ask this question, and I
STILL don't know if I'm in the right place. I used to email a Microsoft help
person and would get an answer in a day or two. Now it's 59 BUCKS JUST TO
ASK A QUESTION????? DELL won't help either - "sir, you have a "hardware
warranty" and not a "software warranty". Jerks.)

Any assistance would be appreciated. Now if I can only find my way back
here to check the answers...

there is a correlation that
exists between the blank
desktop, explorer.exe and
the registry hive and the
availability of resources
on your computer.

-------------------

instead of rebooting via
the task manager,

go to processes and kill
explorer.exe

then go to the first tab
and launch a explorer.exe

-------------------

the next thing I would do
is to tune up your system
with:

--------------------

finally, double check your
startups via run>msconfig.

make sure that needless
startups are not initiating
everytime your computer
boots up and needlessly
utilize valuable cpu and
memory resources.

The explorer.exe "is" your desktop.

Regain control of your desktop by manually launching explorer.exe in
Task Manager.

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware
detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/
SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

They can be uninstalled later if desired.

Reboot, then troubleshoot any remaining issues.

Similar problem...

Hi. I'm extremely new here. I probably should post this its own topic, if I am, just direct me to the right direction.

When I boot up windows in either safe mode or normally, I only get a wallpaper and a mouse on the screen. I can only get up task manager via CTRL-ALT-DELETE. I'm running Windows XP Home SP2( I believe ). But here is where my problem differs. When I try to open the explorer.exe via RUN, it says I do not have admin powers even when I'm on the only account on the PC, which is an administrator account. I recently got rid of some malware called Windows Police Pro, maybe it has something to do with it? Maybe something was messed with in the registries ..

Anyways, if someone could shed some light on this, I would be eternally grateful.
