Win XP start up problems

Marcus

t have a 6 month old Win XP machine that I have put SP3 onto, not sure if
that update is reason for the start up problems can now get as not sure if
syarted at same time or not.

What happens is on start up the machine runs through things as expected, get
the start up sound, my wallpaper appears and then the HD seems to just tick
over doing nothing for up to 3 minutes then start up goes ok if bit slow
until all running correctly and no issues dring use of pc.

What has also started happening is the wallpaper appears and the HD just
seems to tick over & over and nothing happens at all, I then force off the
machine using button on front of pc and on restart all appears to go ok, this
has just happened before I put this note on.

Have run full virus check etc, nothing found and use Ashampoo Magical Defrag.

Any ideas or is the HD showing signs of problem.

The hard drive may well be playing up, but did you ensure that the machine
was clear of all spyware before updating, and that you virus checker was
temporarily disabled?

Have you tried starting in safe mode?

A virus checker will not do the job of keeping you well protected, and
running a defrag of any kind also won't.

What antivirus program do you have? Are you running Windows Defender? You
should be..

Thanks Mike

Windows update did the download of SP3 for me so just let it carry on with
how it wanted to do the update, dont think did anything different to usual as
far as stopping virus checker.

I use Zone Alarm Security Suite as both Firewall & Virus Checker & Anti Spy
but also run Windows Defender and this has never found any issue.

ZA has never found a virus but does find spyware each time it runs a check.

Try going into safe mode.. then go into Control panel and uninstall the SP3
update.

If you want to continue use ZA security suite, you will also have to
uninstall the KB942763 update as it seems to clash with ZA. Ensure that
KB942763 does not install for as long as you are running ZA.

Personally, I would stick with KB942763 and not use ZA at all. There are
free products which do the same job as ZA while still allowing Windows to
update as it should..

Is it the same spyware ? - which you need to get rid of .

Thanks for this, may try what you suggest, can you point me to some free
Firewalls and Virus Checkers that can rely on.

I did use AVG Free before I paid for the ZA security Suite.

Re KB942763 I think there was an issue with ZA at the time but they got
around it if thinking of right update now.
