Blank Screen on Startup

When I start my computer up usually after I see the windows splash screen my
screen goes blank. If I restart the computer enough times I evenetually get
to actually see my GUI. My video card is an ATI Radeon 9200, and my monitor
is a 19" crt monitor. I keep my screen settings at 1024x768 pixels and 32
bit colour. My last computer ran on windows 98 and was so old the display
adapter was built into the mother-board and these settings worked, plus the
computer had the same monitor. So I am not willing to settle for lower
quality from a higher quality computer and operating system. Also I had this
problem before and I followed someone's advice of reinstalling windows.
didn't work. not even reformating worked. I am beginning to suspect it may
be a quirk caused by SP2. Anyone have any idea what is causing this problem
and how to fix it?

Hi Andrew, I have exactly the same problem, but it has only been since I
downloaded and installed SP2. You turn the PC on and you get the windows XP
bit up then the screen just goes blank and you cant see anything and this
happens no matter how many times you try turning the PC on. Have you had any
joy yet ?

Thanks for the reply Wayne. I had found a way to take out service pack 2,
but still had the problem. The odd thing is that this problem only happens
when the computer has been off for a while. I now have another partition
with ubuntu linux set up on it, so what I do now is let the computer start
and warm up for a while and get to the linux startup screen. Then when the
computer is warmed up I tell linux to reboot, only this time on startup I
choose windows instead. Not much of a better situation than before huh?
Haven't taken the time to figure out how to get ubuntu to connect to my
wireless router so still stuck with windows, which I'll admit can be a lot
simpler in some ways. I wonder if it could have to do with the extra case
fans jiggling the video card. I notice when it first starts up they don't
sound as smooth. Anyway hopefully windows will create a fix for this but
somehow I don't think they will.
