Blank screen after upgrade

I upgraded to Vista Home Premium from XP. The installation appeared to go OK.
After a reeboot I get the log in screen. I enter my password and then the
screen turns either black or blue and no desktop is displayed. The only
window that is displayed is the 'text to speach' application. This is working
and through a long route I can get a web page to display and eventually the
control panel. So the system is working I just cannot get the desktop to
display

Hi Tom,

If you refer to my post 'Clean Install Windows Vista Using Upgrade Media',
also in this newsgroup (dated 9/21/2007), you should be able to solve your
problem.

Hi Tom,

You will lose your existing programs and have to reinstall them, but that's
no bad thing. Most programs write some settings in the registry and the best
way to ensure that the correct settings are written is to simply install the
program. This is the reason why many programs fail to work correctly on
machines that have been upgraded - the information about that program in the
registry is no longer valid. Your user data is a different matter, however.
This can be preserved by transferring it to a USB memory stick or a writeable
CD/DVD. This data can then be restored from this media afterwards.

I thought that would be the case. So I'll have to locate all my original discs.

Thanks again
