Blank page when logging request via the web

Hello Everyone,

Windows XP SP1 and SP2

We have a system log through the internal web interface, i.e. when a user
has a problem s/he can either telephone to the Service desk, send an email,
or log the problem through the company web interface. 31 users out of 13000
complained that when they tried to log a problem through the web and then
click on 'submit', they receive a blank page instead of the reference of the
log.

We tried the following to no avail:

Deleting cookies
Deleting all temporary files
Deleting downloaded objects
Restoring default security level
Clear connections
Removing the Plug-Ins in Internet Explorer
Removing the Plug-ins in the registry
Resetting the Dll files: Shdocvw.dll, Msjava.dll, Actxprxy.dll,
Oleaut32.dll, Mshtml.dll, Browseui.dll, Shell32.dll.

We are thinking that it might (just might) be a problem with some settings
in their IE. Are we right or wrong ? Can anyone give us some indications
which might help us ?

Much appreciated.

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

3. Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following message:

DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded.

4. If that doesn't fix it, see this article:

http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#new_window

5. If you are using WinXP try this:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/reg/IE_Default_Browser.reg

6. See Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1 may display a blank Web page
after you select Auto-Select encoding
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870863

You can also try this:

Go to Start/run, and type SFC (msconfig for WinXP).
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk' ("Expand File" for WinXP).
Type oleaut32.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file's location, which is
probably in the Win98 (i386 for WinXP) folder of your installation CD-ROM
(typically D:\Win98), or in your Windows\Options\Cabs (Windows\i386 for
WinXP) folder, as the case may be.

Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System (C:\Windows\System32
for WinXP), and click OK. System File Checker (or msconfig) looks for the
file, saves it as you requested, and then tells you that 'the file has been
successfully extracted'.

You may need to reboot.

Hi Best,

Thank you for posting!

I understand several clients will open blank page when you click a
hyperlink in Internet Explorer. If there is any misunderstanding, please
let me know at your earliest convenience.

Thanks Frank's detailed and helpful information. Additionally, I would like
to share some steps for your reference:

To solve the issue, please try the following steps below:

1. Quit all running programs.

2. Click Start, and then click Run.

3. In the Open box, type "regsvr32 urlmon.dll" (without the quotation
marks), and then click OK. On the message confirming that the registration
is successful, click OK.

NOTE: If it does not find the .dll you can click Start, Run, regsvr32 /i
urlmon.dll (or whichever .dll is missing) to re-install and re-register the
dynamic link library.

NOTE: In some cases registering the urlmon.dll will be sufficient to
resolve the issue. Try the links at this point, if they still won't work
continue with the following steps.

4. Click Start, click Run, type "regsvr32 mshtml.dll" (without the
quotation marks), and then click OK. On the message that confirms the
successful registration of this file, click OK.

5. Click Start, click Run, type "regsvr32 shdocvw.dll" (without the
quotation marks), and then click OK. On the message that confirms the
successful registration of this file, click OK.

6. Click Start, click Run, type "regsvr32 browseui.dll" (without the
quotation marks), and then click OK. On the message that confirms the
successful registration of this file, click OK.

7. Click Start, click Run, type "regsvr32 msjava.dll" (without the
quotation marks), and then click OK. On the message that confirms the
successful registration of this file, click OK.

8. Restart the computer.

Hope the information helps. If there is anything that is unclear, please
feel free to let me know.

Thanks & Regards,

Jason Tan

Hello Jason !
Always good to see you !

I followed Frank's proposition on 2 machines (XP sp2) which are experiencing
the blank page - there are 31 with the same problem. It did not work.
Although it did not work, I would like to thank Frank very much for his offer
to help. Much appreciated.

I also registered the following .dll:

urlmon.dll
mshtml.dll
shdocvw.dll
browseui.dll
msjava.dll

However, mshtml.dll and msjava.dll have failed to register. This failure
also occurred on machines which DO NOT experience the blank page. I may add
that in terms of browsing or connecting to the internet, there is nothing
wrong. It's only some users when they try to log a call through our internal
web interface. They fill in the appropriate field and then click on
"submit". At this point, it returns a blank page instead of the
acknowledgment receipt with the details (reference etc.).

One of the 2 machines I went to in order to try Frank's suggestion behaved
strangely. Before trying Frank's suggestion, I wanted to check in order to
make sure that it is "infected" by the problem. I performed a test and it
succeeded ! But on my second, third, fourth... attempt, it failed with the
blank page. Afterwards, I tried Frank's and the registration of the .dll
files, it did not make the difference.

It might be something else ?

Grateful thanks.

Best.

PS: Just to check, have you received the .CAB file ?

Hi Best,

Thanks for your update!

At this moment, I would like to confirm the following information on your
side.

1. Please rebuild a new user account and test the issue on the problematic
machine. Can the issue be reproduced?

2. Please confirm whether the issue can be reproduced in Clean Boot
environment.
=========================================================================

1. Click the "Start" and select "Run".
2. Type msconfig in the open box, and then click "OK".
3. On the "Services" tab, click to choose "Hide All Microsoft
Services" and click to choose Disable All.
4. On the Startup page, click Disable All.
5. Click "OK" to reboot your computer.
6. When you see the message, choose "Don't show this message or
launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" and click OK.

3. Please confirm whether the issue can be reproduced in Safe Mode with
Networking.
============================================================================

1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your
keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple
operating systems, you can press the F8 key when you see the Boot Menu.

2. In "Windows Advanced Option Menu", use the arrow keys to select
Safe Mode with Networking, and then press ENTER.

3. If you are running other operating systems on the computer,
click Microsoft Windows on the list that is displayed and then press ENTER.

If there is anything that is unclear, please feel free to let me know.

Thanks & Regards,

Jason Tan
