Blank Desktop

My friend has been having problems with viruses on his pc so downloaded alot
of spyware protection etc. He also updated his pc using the ms update and
after he restarted his pc from this he no longer has any icons or toolbar on
his desktop. He really doesnt want to restore his pc to an earlier date
because the pc was so badly infected and has taken alot of time and effort to
get it to this stage and this good, any ideas how to sort this?

Usually when Windows Updates are installed, new Restore Points are
created. So if the PC was clean when the Updates were installed,
there is no problem with removing them on this way. Then reinstall the
updates one by one to avoid problems and to find out what update
exactly causes this problem.
