Black Tuesday Update Mess

Hello All
I don't call update Tuesday 'Black Tuesday' for nothing.
Seven hours ago I decided that I had better download the latest offerings
from MS
KB's, 914388, 916595, & 917159
Before doing so I check with the web based MS Update discussion group, there
being no update newsgroup.
My God, I could not believe the problems that some were having, but nearly
all of these seemed to generate around Servers etc.
Being not on a server, I decided to go ahead.
That took care of the first couple of hours.
I then download the three, one at a time, rebooted and used the computer to
see if there were adverse effects for 15 to 30 minutes after each boot.
5 hours later I was pretty pleased with myself - I had got away with the
downloads.
I switched off the computer.
Two hours ago I switched on - half the system tray icons didn't show and my
antivirus refused to start. OE & IE would not open either.
Disconnected the modem - switched off the comp - which took at least 15
minutes to save the settings and close - then I again rebooted.
Again the task bar didn't fill. Did Task Manager which took an age to
show - in there were 5 'dumprep.exe' and 2 wuauclt.exe(windows update) using
all the CPU(Idle was 0%)
I know that dumprep is the error reporting dump tool but at that time I
could not even get into search to find out what the 'exe' one was, as TM
just froze - couldn't end any applics - nothing.
I had to keep pulling the plug to switch off.
Each time I switched on the same happened - I also saw in TM there were 5
svchost.exe(generic host processes) - I have noticed one or two before but
not five!
Each time I switched on I promised myself I would delete all three updates
and do a System Restore but could not get into either.
After pulling the plug half a dozen times, everything loaded as normal, as
if nothing had happened.
I enabled antivirus and scanned the system with everything I have - nothing
showed.
I cannot explain what or how this all happened - but it scared the XXXX out
of me.
Does anyone have any ideas.

Recently, in these groups, somebody said something like ' the problems
caused by updates were not as great as the problems caused by not
downloading updates' ?

I also installed these updates on Tuesday onto both of my computers. They
installed quickly without incident. I haven't had any problem with either
computer since the installation. One of the computers is running XP Pro and
the other is running XP MCE.

Good to hear that as I did see a couple of posters in the web group with XP
Pro and they had identical problems to the majority of the server 2003 lot.
I could not see an XP Home problem.

Wow, now that is an endorsement of this toy operating system if I ever heard
one! 5 hours of time wasted to get the latest updates. Now isn't that an
efficient and convenient way to run ones computer. Sorry, but I snipped the
rest of your sad experiences. It was just getting too painful to read. :)

I have one machine with Pro and the other two machines have Home. I recently
downloaded the Tuesday updates, there were 9 of them, and since then have had
no trouble whatsoever.

Your running OE and I imagine IE which require the most patching, then
you complain....

I updated with SP2 and have turn'd off my updates I don't get them I
don't care for the sunrises involved..

The only update I've installed was for the WMF problem and that was
third party.

I don't hat the WGA problems I'm reading here, and my machine is clean
- not saying I don't have a rootkit, but I depend upon my modem lights
to let me know of odd behavior.

I don't update and I don't have problems, plain and simple.
I use Opera browser and Agent newsreader, I'm behind an ADSL modem so
ZoneAlarm is mostly installed to tell me what want's out. Nod32 is my
virus protector that I never notice, only time I've seen it in action
is when I was testing it http://vx.netlux.org/

Hi Nostop.
Your SH ONE T cleared as well, for clarity.
Thanks for the sympathy - I did do things slowly on purpose. It worked last
Black Tuesday and the one before - the one before that I did them all
together and regretted it.
Now looking forward to the next 'trial by Microsoft's.
The endorsements are even better in that discussion group - I spent upwards
of 5 hours - some of those poor buggers are still trying to sort out their
servers and systems. Some have still not got things sorted since the
release date.
Mine is running better than before the updates - its daft.
No wonder Kurt is away trying to find out how Linux works ;-) ;-)

Why did it take 5 hours? I read all the descriptions, found only one
update that applied to me, downloaded it, and the whole thing took
perhaps 15 minutes. I did not apply it until the next day, but I am
only counting the time it took to determine what patch to get, and to
get it.

YOU will regret not updating...someday...sometime. Mark my
words.

Microsoft is always improving things JUST for your benefit. Too
bad really that you don't appreciate their concern.

I've been at this awhile, long story short, if anything ever does
happen that I can't access the system, I dual boot so just back door
in and fix it.

I've allows dual booted (Win95,NT on) and never had to repair my own
system.

Microsoft writes bad code, always has, almost all the patches are for
buffer overflows - so MS gave us DEP in SP2 :)
http://tinyurl.com/4o6bb

My concern with malware are rootkits, and nothing Microsoft can do
will prevent those. http://www.cio.com/blog_view.html?CID=23011
only safe hex can avoid those, and Sony proved that doesn't always
work.

FWIW, I installed the 3 updates one at a time and on separate days and no
problems as of yet.
I my system has XP home on it.
I guess it has been over a week now.
I can't say the same for the last Windows updates.
A few I decided not to install especially when using Adobe Photoshop
Elements 4.0 and emailing of photos.
Just a thought!

What descriptions do you read - the abbreviated bit when you click on
'more..'
Tells you nothing - I read through the MS articles to make sure.
Obviously I am not as clever as you and need to read these articles more
than the once.
That's why I have some 14 bits of software and other useless stuff in the
hidden updates folder.

In my circles, I'm finding people who allow the auto-update to
take care if it are having zero problems while those who download
and separately install them are having some problems.
When you check out the updates, are you checking for
dependencies of one upon the other? I've had two machines come
in recently which only needed to have them removed and installed
in the right order. Occasionally one depends on the preceding
and if you get that backwards, well ... .

I don't keep track of them because so far I've had zero
problems except for the one that wouldnt' install and which was
quickly corrected.

Did you check to see that what you downloaded didn't depend on
one of the others being present first? More than one person has
gotten caught with this pick & install method; you have to be
careful.
