Black Screen with Windows xp

hi: windows xp is displaying a black screen on boot up
with 5 columns across the top. Is this the set up mode and
if so how do i get windows back on the screen?

I don't recognize that description at all! If the screen is all black, how
can you see any columns?

You need to tell us more, since we can't see your screen. At what point do
you see this? Before or after Windows starts loading? Which of the several
startup screens do you see before this final screen?

Also, have you had WinXP installed and running on this computer, or is this
happening during the initial install? Are you upgrading or doing a clean
install?

There are SO MANY things you haven't told us. :>(
