Last night, I ridiculously uninstalled the NVIDIA driver from my
computer (I was in a rush uninstalling Norton and foolishly thought it
was some kind of Norton add-on). The computer very quickly closed
everything down and shut down. When it restarted, I could hear it sound
like it was logged into Windows XP as normal, but I cannot see anything
at all. Not a cursor, not the Windows logo, no options to start in safe
mode or vga mode, nothing.
I've been all over the internet and tried everything imagineable.
Holding down F5 when it starts to boot up, does nothing. Rapidly
pressing F8 when it starts to boot up also does nothing. Holding Ctrl
when it starts to boot up does nothing. I started up the computer with
a Device Drivers disk that came from the manufacturer and still nothing
(I can hear it reading the disk, but I still don't see a thing). I
started it up with the Recovery Disk from the manufacturer and still no
picture, but now I hear a couple beeps. I made an MS-DOS start-up disk
from another computer and that still did nothing. Yet another sire
recommended removing the battery for a bit and then putting it back. I
couldn't figure out how to get the battery out, though. It almost seems
welded into place (there is a black rim that encircles it and you can't
get in between the rim and the battery to lift it out of place). I
would like to avoid trying that again as I am just at the point of
wanting to go all Office Space on that motherboard and punt it into
next week. I fear I may have completely erased everything on the damn
drive without ever laying eyes on a single thing.
GeekSquad was working on it earlier yesterday, creating a network and
hooking up a router. I gave them a call to see if they might be able to
help but they don't know their ass from a hole in the wall and can't
send back to my home until Saturday (in addition to the Black Screen of
Death, I am also getting the dreaded "Enter Network Password" nightmare
on all the computers that were added to the network).
The monitor also works as a TV and the cable channels appear fine, so
it is definitely not a problem with the monitor. I do not have any
Windows XP installation CD. It is a vpr matrix computer.
Is my computer a total garbage heap now? Help!
