Black Mesa Source, the highly-anticipated Half-Life remake, is available to download now.
The free mod, which has been in development for over eight years, is available to download via the official Black Mesa website - provided the servers haven't melted by the time you read this, of course.
Failing that, you can try and download the game from ShackNews or grab the torrent.
Black Mesa Source is a completely reworked version of the original Half-Life, remade in Valve's Source engine by 40 volunteer developers. The game offers updated graphics and redesigned levels.
Be aware that you'll only be able to play up to the Lambda Core section of the game, though. The rest isn't quite ready. Oh, and you'll also need a Source Engine game installed on your computer.
Still, with new releases being a little light on the ground this week, at least it's something to keep you entertained over the weekend.
Think they've done a good job? Let us know what you think of the fan-made remake in the comments below.

Just had a quick blast. Seems fun, loads of very positive reviews out there.

Few things....

- Make sure you have the Source SDK Base 2007 installed (found in your games library > tools)
- Dont worry about the installer or the .md5, just download the main files extract them to your Steam/steamapps/sourcemods folder.....

- Restart Steam and you should be good to go. Will be in your library cunningly labeled Black Mesa.

Enjoy. :)

Oh, this is very good indeed :) Surprising how much detail you can see now in the improved version. There's different characters, narrative and some subtle changes to the storyline and also they've added achievments.

It's worth mentioning that once files are unzipped to Source Mods folder the *.exe file has to be activated for the game to install and the game does take a good 5 to 10 minutes to install. Then close and restart Steam.

I didn't have the SDK Base 2007 installed but as soon as I started Black Mesa Steam automatically installed it. Just where is that 'Tools' link? I couldn't find it.

TXD: The servers are extremely busy but there are quite a lot of them, I got lucky with the fifth one I chose which I think was Fileshack in the USA.

I didn't run any exe, just extracted the file from the blackmesa.7z download and restarted Steam. Where is this exe you speak of? :)

It is :) I'm up to level 9 'Aprehension' now and this is a fair bit more difficult than the original, lottsa puzzles, red herrings and backtracking.

Not frustrating though, this game oozes playability. Be prepared to use 'Space' and 'c' in unison a lot ;)
