Sound issues half life 2-Asus A8N

Is anyone running half life 2 on this board?

I dont get any sound coming out of the front left and right speakers when
playing the game and I have to be facing the sound source in the game to be
able to hear what is going on.

I upgraded from an Nforce 2 mainboard and the sound was fine on that.

By the way, the speakers all work fine in all other games.

System specs
Athlon 64 4000
2 gig ram
Geforce 6800GT
Asus A8N with onboard sound
XP pro

Thanks all!

Same issue here with A8N-SLI Dlx. My audio river version is 5.10, but I've
read that 4.57 "fixes" the problem. Not sure if it supports our boards,
though.

I thought I would see what ASUS had to say about it. Here's the funny
response:

Dear Friend :
Thank you for contacting ASUS Customer Service.
My name is Ailon and I would be assisting you today

Sir, if you want get the 6-channel, you must use 6-channel audio source. .
You can try to play some music songs (like MP3 songs) by Windows Mediaplayer
or Play multichannel DVD films to enjoy the 6 channel audio . Some playback
software does not support multichannel speakers mode , like Winamp ,
Realone...
So please make sure Half life 2 whether support 6 channel . If ok and if it
is possible , i suggest you install the Half life 2 patch for test . I
suspect it is your game issue .

Best regards ! .

Finally fixed the issue myself. Go to Steam Support and search for
"5.1 Sound Problems in Half-Life 2".

It has the links for the audio drivers that are known to work.
I'm using an Nforce 4 and I downgraded my Realtek audio drivers to version
3.63. Actually, I have no idea what version I was running as it looks like
5.10 to me and still does. Not sure I'm looking in the right place. So, I
just downloaded the 3.63 drivers, double clicked them, ran thru that and
rebooted. Then, checked Windows speaker config - looked ok. Then checked
the ASUS speaker config - it was back to 2 channels. Fixed that, started
HL2 and it worked perfectly. Doom3 also seems to still be working fine.

Good luck,

Dark Helmet
