New build.
Asus A8N-E w Athlon 64 X2 3800+, 2 Gig PC 4000, 1 SATA 250 Gig, EVGA 6600
video, DVD+-R, DVD.

On power up the video BIOS info appears, followed by the Asus Logo screen
with message at bottom right:

Hit Del to enter setup.
If I hit Del *quickly*, the message changes to "Entering setup...", then the
system hangs at that point.

I get the same results if I load a boot floppy and wait. The floppy drive
and optical drives are never accessed

I have powered speakers hooked up to line out, but no audio messages are
provided.

I've tried (so far) removing one of the RAM modules. No effect.

I'm reusing a case w/400 Watt PSU, rated at only 15A on the 12V rail.
Any chance this is a power issue?
FWIW, I *do* have the extra 4 connector power cable hooked up to the
motherboard.

Any suggestions?

Hi
You need BIOS rev =>1007 for the X2 3800+ if it's not, then use the ASUS EZ
BIOS routine detailed in section 2.1.5 of the manual.

Yes. I had the same problem trying to use a 400W PSU like that that's
still running a K7 system today. Exactly the same, except sometimes I
could get to bios, but it locked up then. Bought a cheap 600W with 26A on
+12v and it's been running good 24/7 for almost 2 years now.

Well, I pretty much verified mine was a power problem by tying an old AT
PSU 12v in with the ATX. I could get a little farther along then, but not
much. Pulled the old PSU off and it went back to shuting down ealier.

Dead on, Wes. Thank you very much!
Got a 650W cheapie (ChiefMax brand), and the new PC is running great.
