bizarre network cable unplugged error

I loaded a bunch of software for a new Sony Clie PDA, and
immediately started getting a bizarre problem:
The "network cable unplugged" notice in the taskbar
starting alternating very rapidly with "enabled" until the
computer essentially froze about 5 minutes later. This
problem goes away when I disable local area connections.

I'm networked with another computer in the house that has
a cable internet connection.

Checking the cables and removing all the PDA software has
not fixed the problem.

Does anybody recognize this problem?

Thanks

Hi,
I had a similar problem that presented me with the same
message.

I have 2 PCs at home networked thru a cross-over Cat 5
cable, both were running Windows 98 SE and both fine in
terms of file, printer and internet connection sharing.

I subsequently upgraded one of my PC's to Windows XP PRO
and got the message as you describe.
I thought it was a problem with the onboard LAN Software
so tried to upgrade the Motherboard software from the
drivers provided on suppliers disc. This caused me
absolute chaos, putting the PC in some kind of shut-
down // boot-up loop and I feel lucky to have escaped
without having to re-format and start again.
I have successfully networked my machines, but only by
buying another PCI network card.
Best of Luck,

Andy
