BITS Problem

Martin Racette

Hi,

I have a problem with BITS that is preventing Windows Update from working
correctly, simply put the service does not start

I have found that in SFC /SCANNOW it tries to fix bitsigd.dll but for some
reasons it can not do it, I also tried to copy the file from a functioning
computer but it can not be copied on the trouble computer

Post this over to the Windows Update newsgroup for a comprehensive answer and
include your OS and SP along with any error message that you have received

news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsupdate

M

Martin Racette

I do not have access to this newsgroup the one that have windowsupdate have
microsoft.public.it.windowsupdate, microsoft.public.jp.windowsupdate, or
microsoft.public.pl.windowsupdate

And I do not understand either of these languages

Martin

What happens if you click on the direct link for that newsgroup that I posted for
that purpose. I will post it again here

Using your newsreader
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsupdate
or
On the web:
http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...efault.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate

Or I can crosspost it there for you if you provide the details in your post of your
OS and SP level and any error message that is shown on screen or in Event Viewer
concerning this error in a new post in this same thread

What did it say about bitsigd.dll in CBS.log?

M

Martin Racette

When I used the NEWS://, it crashed Windows Mail, and the other I can not
get access to it, I get a blank page

I use Vista Ultimate 64, the BITS service does not start when the system
reboot, and when I try to start it manually the status bar get to about 20%
and then it says that the service can not be started, that is all

M

Martin Racette

I tried the bits repair tool even before I did the SFC and it told me that
there was no need for repair at this time

There is a very good chance that you are seeing the effects of a hijackware
infection!

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2. [WinXP ONLY!! =>] Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan
(only!) in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum, not here.

I have already done all those step, my antivirus does not expire, and was/in
uptodate, and so is Windows, I did all the updates manually since they can
be downloaded by the freaking program that Microsft placed in Windows, the
only one that I did not installed so far is SP2.

Did you install SP2 on this machine? As it will install bitsigd.dll
6.0.6002.18005, which should replace the older 6.0.6001.1800 entry.

Since BITS doesn't work you should probably download the stand alone
version.

If the above problem with bitsigd.dll blocks install of SP2, you'll need to
remove the key
amd64_microsoft-windows-bits-igdsearcher_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6001.18000_none_0d8ad88d475dc08e
located under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS\DerivedData\Components\.

Remember to backup/export the key before you remove it, in case it doesn't
work.

Again. You have no idea what you are doing or saying. This is a Windows Update issue
caused by a corrupted bits statefiles and you need the bits tool to rectify this
issue.
You CANNOT download and install the Stand Alone version of bits in hope that it will
fix the issue since this bits corruption is within and you need this repaired and
NOT exchanged.
I have posted a link concerning this to Martin which includes the tool to fix the
bits.

Windows Update issues should be posted to the windowsupdate newsgroup as Windows 98
issues should be posted to the w98 newsgroup. That is why the crosspost.

And PLEASE. Stop using the CBS.log for troubleshooting all posted issues. That log
can and is misleading
