When I cold boot my computer...it has a status bar that
shows the bios loading . it goes about 3/4 of the
way...then locks up.
If I use the 'del' key when the loading of the bios is
happening, I can get into the setup feature, but if I try
to make any changes...the computer locks up.
If I can get into setup,...does that mean my bios is
still ok?
I bought this puter from someone who tried to change the
cpu...but since then it has this problem. The old cpu is
back in...but now this problem. Is it possible the
motherboard is shot now too?..in which case I have a
lovely bookend.

I pulled the battery out for a couple minutes....no
books...same problem
I should add that the fellow I bought the computer from
tried to upgrade from a 1.2 gig to a 1.4 gig...(duh..)
and he picked up a cpu chip for 20$. He tried to install
it..bent a few pins etc etc....and then gave up.. He re-
installed the original cpu...but this is the problem he
got...so I bought the computer off him with hopes of
getting it fired up again...

If your computer is not even getting through the POST (which is what it
sounds like from your description), you have hardware problems.

Answered in your previous post. You have hardware problems. Messing
about in the BIOS settings isn't going to change this.

I thought you were talking about an advance golf club (mayber you
misspelled "putter") and was hot to go out and buy it. Then I
realized you just didn't want to take the time to type the extra three
letters COM before PUTER...sigh...........so much for improving my
golf score.

1. Don't start a new post instead of sticking with your existing one.
This fragments the thread and makes it impossible to sort out.

2. "Bent a few pins?" Sounds like you found the problem. It may or
may not be fixable.

You could try "resetting" the BIOS. Look in the manual for the
motherboard for the "Clear CMOS" or Clear BIOS" jumper location. And
then try setting the BIOS defaults when it comes back up.
