Big Trouble in XP City

Hello,

Since the failed attempts - 4! - at installing an Audigy
2ZS aound card, subsequent removals, uninstalls and
system restores, Windows XP has gone kinda mad.

At this moment it is running with totalstability, but the
following are "events" that continue to occur randomly:

I Must run checkDisk in order to load the OS;
If I click on an app - any app - the computer may
instantly reboot and then it runs a CheckDisk as if it
had been shut off incorrectly;
Numerous errors noted in Event Viewer. Under "System"
"Advanced Config. and Power Interface" errors
"DCOM" errors
"W32TIME" errors (Thought this was Win2K?)
Under "Application"
"WindosProductActivation" errors
"Volume Shadow Copy Service" (VSS) errors
"userenv" (failure to unload my user profile) errors

I have run several HDD (Western Digital) utilities to
troubleshoot the health of the drive. All check out 100%
Windows says my HDD is healthy. I am using the system now
with 77% free resources and all services: video, sound
and so on are performing fast and stable.
finally . . .included in my start up list is this little
gem which I've never seen before . . .

"%systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k"

Anybody got any great ideas for me, or is this machine
possessed? Thanks for reading.

You can try booting from the XP CD and do a repair install over the existing
installation - this MIGHT clear up your problems.

Thanks Jerry,

It's an odd problem I've been trying to deal with. I have
been reading about repair installs and I may try that.

A friend of mine suggested I send zeroes to the HDD and
then do a fresh install but I have XP Home/Upgrade. Can
you do a full install with this version? Seems like not.

Anyway, thanks for the reply.

Google: dumprep. Google is your XP resource. You can do a complete
fresh install with the upgrade if you still have the CD (or floppy set)
of the qualifying Windows OS you originally had installed. It works
just like the original upgrade installation. Since you have a full
upgrade CD, you could try a repair install.

I have the Audigy 2ZS and had problems from the start with
conflicts between the Audigy Control Panel and Norton Live
Update. I too got that "dump rep" process in CONFIGSYS.
I had an initial problem with an error message and CHKDSK
running at every boot up on my Z: drive (I set up Z to
handle my swap file). I had to temporarily move my swap
file to C:, reformat Z: and move the swap file back. The
CHKDSK went away. I have completely uninstalled all of the
Audigy add-in programs that came with the card and
unchecked all of the processes such as Control Panel and
volume control.
My system has be fairly stable but I sometimes get reboots
when the system gets to the desktop - it may take up to
two reboots before I get stable.
Have you resolved your problems?

Hi Alan,

Haven't had the "box" on for a day or 2. Almost missed your reply. I removed every spec of the Audigy card - which was the install from hell - and reinstalled the PCI512 I had before. Still the problem is there.

A couple of different things happen: I might be on line and I'll click the back arrow (IE6) and I get the error "IE has encountered a problem . . ." this happens quite a bit, lately. Or, I might just open an application or a folder and the computer just reboots. But it reloads as if it has been shut off improperly and runs a check disk.

I clicked on my virus software the other night to do a scan - AVG6Free. I've used it for a couple of years. Dependable and no probelms - and the computer immediately shut off and rebooted, then rebooted, rebooted until I stopped it by hitting the power switch. When it restarted, it did it's check disk thing and then it reloads OK.

Now, every time I shut down, I schedule a check disk at restart. If I don't it just goes into that reboot reboot reboot thing. It is all very weird! and nobody seems to have an answer. Even the Windows MVP's who have read my posts. I think my computer is possessed.

Incidentally, there are articles around suggestion dificulties with SB Audigy cards. I've been using their products for years with zero complaints but this one seems like a real bummer. Their tech support was completely unhelpful in this situation, too, which is not their usual standard.

Anyway, first, I'm going to try an XP repair install. If that doesn't work, I have Windows 2000 which is very stable. If these don't work, I might buy a new one or try building my own. That's my story. Thanks for letting me know about your solution. Hope you have better luck.

Thanks again.
