Hi all
XP Home Edition.
Sometime over this last weekend I managed to collect a turdlet that keeps
redirecting me to the scumbags at search.biz. I ran all the fixers I could
find and read all the web pages I could find. One of them had a link to a
Microsoft page that told me that there was a security hole in IE and that
an update was available.
I have my automatic updates turned off so clicked on the button and
downloaded the update pack. It told me there were 16 updates and proceeded
to install them all. I then had to reboot. When it came back up everything
ran at 10% speed and I noticed that the machine had reconnected and was
downloading updates. I killed that off but it came back, and back and
back... I went back to Microsoft and the updates page and noticed that
there was an SP2 (ok, so I don't pay attention <g>) so thought I ought to
download that as not having installed it first may have screwed something.
It told me it was having a prod around in the back of my machine to
determine what I needed and then downloaded ~96M. It got to 100%, said it
was complete and was installing - and hung there.
So, now I don't know what state the machine is in and recommendations as
what, if anything, I should do will be most welcome. It *was*, up until
about five minutes ago, running horribly slowly but it *seems* to be back
to normal. Ummmm.
TIA
