Best XP Pro Upgrade from Home...Progam backup?

I know I can backup my documents and music on a DVD-R, but is there anyway I can copy my Programs and Program Files, or do I have to go back and install every single one over again? Does XP just upgrade and keep all the same Programs? I may have been told to do a clean install in order to use Avid DV Xpress. Is this really neccessary?

When you upgrade from Home to Pro the program settings are retained except that the additional features of XP Pro

And to be on the safe side back up your data. Programs and program files cannot be backed up. You will need the original CDs to install the softwares again.
