Best X800 drivers for Oblivion?

D

Derek Baker

Been running Oblivion ok on Cat 6.5, but had a few minor glitches, so
upgraded. Tried 6.11, 6.10 and 6.9 - all of them had severe stuttering
problems; almost a slideshow at times.

Before I try the intervening ones, any suggestions?

Thanks

I had no probs with my X800Pro with recent Oct/Nov drivers (dunno the
version offhand - I'm at work).

Turn off antialiasing before you switch drivers. Reports claim that Oblivion
and Radeon do not see eye-to-eye with FSAA turned on. That alone might end your
slideshow.

Possibly, doesn't explain why the 6.5s are ok with FSAA. Been
recommended the NGO optimized driver; going to give it a try.

My x800PRO ran the game beautifully on whatever the newest official
drivers were when Oblivion was released. I havn't updated them since.
I ran with AA on 2x with no problems either. Sorry i can't be more
specific but that machine just got torn apart.

I ran the game quite well on my X850XT with Cat 6.4, which I'm still using.

I suggest that in the 3D section of your Control Center that you disable
Catalyst AI and "let the application decide" the rest.

And turn the graphical settings in the game down to something reasonable,
like 1024x768 and "medium" or somesuch, which will probably help your
stuttering problem a lot more than chasing drivers will.

"medium"? screw that :)

Seriously, high+ seems ok - I'm not as sensitive as some to frame rate
(refresh rate yes, frame rate no). Using the NGO optimized drivers now;
ok so far.

Well, 1024x and set everything to "high", then, if the game will run like
that. Like it or not, your card is yesterday's news and you're simply going
to have to make some concessions for it. Either that or spend a grand or
two for some major hardware upgrades--your choice.

After the launch of the G80, possibly the day before yesterday's news,
but it's holding up pretty well for almost two and half years old.

I'm waiting at least for the R600, to compare it to the G80. I'd like to
hold on until later next year for hopefully lower-power versions of
those GPU and Wolfdale, but obviously that depends on how my current
setup fares in the coming months. With constant delays for most games I
may not have to jump too soon.

I don't think Derek has given the rest of his system spec ?
I have the X800 XT PE & have used Cat 6.2 , 6.9, now have current 6.11
I have not noticed any difference between them .
I can get a good Oblivion High at 1024 x 768 with low or none AA & AF
Its odd that one set of driver gave you (seemingly) better performance..
I think you must have changed settings.

Like you I want to stretch my current P4 3.2 Ghz 1.5 Dual Chan Ram X800
to at least next year ...But Splinter Cell Double Agent demanding Shader 3
may show the way of games from now on ..as far as I know there is no way
to impliment Shader 3 on the X800 series.
STILL !! the Nvidia GeeeForce 8800 GTL is down to £300 UK/ $500 USD
if one looks around & has a PCI-E slot & big P.Supply.

Seeing how incredible shader 2 looks with Gothic 3 on my X800Pro
(torchlight, day/night transitions, etc) makes me wonder if PS3 is just
more retail madness & selling hooks for vidcard manufacturers, or really
worth anything at all. Oh Brave New World!

From what I've read SPDA isn't to be missed as much as it might be,
though it was a dumb-arse decision. Looks like GRAW will be my last
Ubisoft game for a while.

"Seeing how incredible shader 2 looks with Gothic 3 "
I have read that the Shader 3 in Gothic 3 isn't in fact there ..reports of
black boxes around things
if the Post Processing setting is set to high.
"SPDA isn't to be missed as much as it might be"
YES ! agreed ..but be nice to have the choice ;) ...
Chaos Theory was more gloss & gleam than decent game (Soooo ! repetitive )..
I've just been playing the 1st Splinter Cell (got the add-on levels) ,1024 X
768 everything
set to Highest & its lovely to look at & play .

True; I've played all the earlier ones. Will probably play DA when I've
upgraded my rig and can pick it up cheap.

I liked CT.

I was on x850pro and let oblivion do the detection.
I also have everything at "let application decide"
I didn't liked the 6 series of drivers until ati claimed the fps gain from
6.8 and later for cod and other games.
Needless to say oblivion played the same with most drivers, but the 6.8 felt
good and maybe a little better,I gained a few fps.
Later drivers brought nothing extra.

Now the important part,I installed a x1900xt and the first thing I noticed
running my games was that it looks slightly different, and better.
Also now I can run oblivion with true HDR and it sure looks amazing.I tested
first with the old settings from my games.

If you feel fine with 6.5 you should stick with those or try every other
driver to feel the difference,if there is.
