I would like to make an animated background to put into powerpoint. i guess
it only takes animated gifs. I know how to use ImageReady and Flash to make
an animation, but are those good programs to make animated gifs for a
background? ImageReady worked best for me, but the animation played choppy.
Is there a way to rendor out specifically for Powerpoint? Is there a specific
program used to make animations specifically for PPT?

Thanks!!

Are you saying the GIF is covering your entire background? If so you are
going to need a very powerful machine, lots of RAM and a great video card to
both play the GIF and run PowerPoint.

What program is usually used to make an animated Gif for powerpoint? The file
that I did out of ImageReady came out to be like 17 MEGS.
What is Office FX? Is that the program that is best to use?

OfficeFx is a great PowerPoint addin that creates high quality animated
backgrounds. Note that it has some minimum requirements for processor and
graphics card. These minimums are fairly high end for most laptops, but the
results are very nice.

I use MS GIF Animator, to animate mine, but there are several other
softwares out there, some of which offer pretty good results.

If you are creating a full size background (1024 x 768 x 16) and adding
additional frames (overlays): the GIF file will be big. There is simply no
way to compress that amount of information down to 100KB and still have it
look recognizable. If your computer cannot display the file well, then
animated backgrounds may be beyond your machines capabilities.

I was just thinking...
how do you set up your animated gifs in PPT? I mean, do you only create a
side bar that animates and you don't put it as a background, but just have it
play on top at the side? Or do you have an animation play in the background
throughout the slide?

Thanks Bill!

Set-up varies a lot depending on the task I'm working on.

A small motion GIFs can make hyperlinking, both self explanatory and
professional in appearance. It can animate a corporate logo throughout the
presentation.

Combined with animation, a swimmer can really swim across the screen, or an
object on the slide can change perspective as the screen changes (think
matrix slow-mo effect).

With multiple masters available in PowerPoint 2002 and up, you can place a
GIF on the master, if you ill need it for multiple slides. You can use them
as the background for an autoshape, to add a new dimension of animation to a
slide. You can use the transparency in a GIF to add motion and effects.
Really, a GIF is one of the more useful tools when putting together a
presentation.

However (and this is big), animation and motion are not always welcome in a
presentation. If the motion will distract or detract: trash it. The
unnecessary use of gratuitous animation is one of the common mistakes of new
presenters.
