Best newsgroup software/reader ?

N

Nic

Hello,

I would like to know what is the best newsgroup software according to
you. I am mainly looking for one that does the basics (reading & posting
, I won't download from binaries) , and which is important for me is the
ability of making groups of newsgroups so that I can sort it by topic
(computer, software...)
I have been using Gravity for a long time but the big lack of this
software is that it can't create groups of newsgroups

So feel free to post your suggestions.

Thanks

Nic

Hello, I would like to know what is the best newsgroup software

Well, I'm a bit biosed... };8)

I'll say Xnews. It works from the day you install it, you can orginize
your subscribed newsgroups into folders, and it has some killer Regex
filtering (which I use far to much of). It's also realitive easy to
custimaize its menues (if you don't mind editing ini files).

The downsides?
It can be unstable for some people, causing crashes & freezes. There's
no spellchecker, but you can use any external Text editor for that, and
there's no inline grapics, or HTML display (but we don't need that).

All around Xnews a well manored beast, but it does take some getting
use to. It is an Online Reader after all...

(Spellchecker Offline)

So, do you beep when start up in the morning?

Normal during POS. My own POS consist of two cups of coffee, without
it I get a very slow "boot" with likely memory failure during the
first hours of "up time".

All the best,

Let's say you have 6 newsgroup that deal with computer, 4 that deal
software , I want to create two groups (computer & software) that will
include newsgroups mentionned previously

I even try to do it with thunderbird but did not find an option to do
so. When you have a long list of newsgroup, I think it will be useful to
sort it by topic and therefore creating groups.

I've never seen any software that can do it. The only other option is
to create duplicate accounts, each subscribing to a different set of
newsgroups.

The Noworyta newsreader does groups, of both news and mail accounts.
It is a bit different and not polished with lots of colors and icons, it
feels more like a poor mans newsreader, but it has some interesting
features and can be configured in different ways.

http://nnr.freeservers.com/

I used it for a year, had groups of newsgroups, and groups of mail
accounts. It is very fast, it is text based, no html.

The main disadvantage, and the reason I stopped using it, was
that I could not simply click on an web url in a message to start my
browser, so I had to copy and paste urls into the browser.

40tude Dialog is my favourite reader.

You can create groups of newsgroups with its category feature --

I know well how that goes. <g> During my slow startup, I often get errors
that AMI would indicate with 1 long and 8 short beeps (memory problem).

After working on computers for days and hours on end, biosed sounds
about right to me. ;)

It's "biased".
