Best Format Recommendation Please?

I'm not really a technical junkie but just want some advice on the best
format to use. I want to copy from ordinary video tapes and 8mm camcorder
tape onto the PC and then onto CD/DVD. Ideally I would like one common
format that will play on both PC and on my DVD player. Both audio and video
quality are important and for file size I would prefer a 3 minute clip to be
nearer 60-70Mb than 600-700! I have MM2 and VCDEasy.

Use MPEG2 format. One hour movie should be about 4 GB. I usally import my DV
avi files into my PC and then edit them and render a MPEG2 file for DVD
burning and then delete the original avi file.
