All, I have tried all of the above and still get the following message when
trying to send using bellsouth:

The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'test', Account:
'mail.bellsouth.net', Server: 'mail.bellsouth.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I have two email accounts, one bellsouth.net and the other cox.net. I do
not have this problem when I choose the cox.net as the default account.
However, with the bellsouth account chosen as the default, I can't send. It
goes through the process of communicating, executing, etc. Then I get the
above error. I have tried EVERY solution posted on this discussion group and
I still can't get my bellsouth account to send. Anybody else having this
problem?

As a general rule, ISPs will block outgoing mail on port 25 (SMTP)
unless your computer is connected to their network at that moment.
Not all do this, but most of the bigger ISPs do that blocking for
anti-spamming reasons. The workaround is as follows:
If either of your two ISPs allows outgoing mail on a port other than
25 (typically 465 or 587), use *that* SMTP server for all your sending
needs. There is no requirement that the incoming and outgoing servers
have to be a matched pair.
The other two options are:
a. Always use the SMTP server of the service you are connected to.
b. Get a free GMail account, and use it for all sending chores, since
GMail uses ports other than '25'.

Thanks Gary for your response. Unfortunately I am in the process of moving
from Cox to Bellsouth and will be getting rid of my cox.net account. I will
only be using my Bellsouth account. I guess I will have to take your advice
and get a free GMail account.

David, Use Mozills's Thunderbird! (
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/ )
version 2.0 is now available.

When setting up the SMTP service, keyin the server: mail.bellsouth.net
Select Port: 25
Enter your user id as the signon for SMTP services
and select the Secure button: TLS (if available)

Secure "TLS (if avalable)" is only needed for SMTP not POP
and its requried by Bellsouth/ATT.

You can also set up the Cox email in the same manner and assign a
different smtp agent to
each email address. Both can be setup for viewing under the same
program window.

David, I can not see it not working! I have been on bellsouth for
years, and have been a
die hard Mozilla user. Now I have a new Dell e521 w/Vista as the Op
system and it
has been working for me since the 1st day I reinstalled Thunderbird to
the Vista platform.
Just does not make sense.
Are you retrieving Mail sent to your bellsouth account?

Unfortunately it doesn't. I have a new Dell E520 running Vista. And, yes, I
can retrieve my Bellsouth mail just fine. I just can't send any. I will try
Thunderbird again and see what happens.

Try, under Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Servers, checking the box
that says your outgoing server requires authentication and the settings
should be the same as the incoming. See if that works.

It was a no go. I still get the following message:

The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'test', Account:
'mail.bellsouth.net', Server: 'mail.bellsouth.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I was an IT professional for six years configuring email accounts for 33
people in my office and I still can't figure out what is wrong. I guess I
have lost my touch. Any other ideas? Just give up?

From everything you have stated before, you have both Windows Mail and
Thunderbird
email programs setup correctly. At this point I would check the
outbound port 25 side
of your firewall(s), or you Virus protection programs.
But you did that already, right?
Try turning off all virus protection for a few minutes and see if
something gets out.
If it gets out, then you've made progress.

Yes, I have tried all of that. I'm going to give it a rest for now. I
really appreciate everyone's help/suggestions.

Maybe I'm missing something but I thought we had decided that
the reason you can't send through Bellsouth is because you're
connected to Cox.

No, that's not the issue. I have tried Bellsouth all by itself. Even with
both accounts I set Bellsouth to the default account and it doesn't work. I
can receive from both accounts just fine and I can send through Cox. I just
can't send through Bellsouth. My Cox account goes away tomorrow so I guess I
will have to use Bellsouth's Webmail.

Maybe thats the trick. Go with only one connection and remove *all*
possible ties to Cox.
