'Before Setup continues, please restart your computer'

B

Biggles

I am checking my PCs for XP compatibility, so have
downloaded Upgrade Advisor.

It worked fine on my Win98 desktop, but whenever I try and
run it on my WinMe laptop, not only is the text very
slightly jumbled, which may just be a display problem, but
when you click 'Next' for the last time, and it goes to
the message "Please wait till Upgrade Advisor starts" it
then says "Before Setup continues, please restart your
computer". It does this every single time, even after
restarting.

I can't go and get XP until this is sorted, as I assume
Setup will work the same way as Upgrade Advisor.

Hi Biggles,

To troubleshoot this problem I would start by clean booting the
Windows ME machine.

1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK. Click
Selective Startup, and then click to clear all of the check boxes. Click
OK, restart the computer, and then try to Windows XP Upgrade Advisor again.

Use Task Manager to kill any unneeded processes that remain after the
reboot.

1. If it still fails and you have access to a Windows XP CD try using the
CD to launch the Upgrade Advisor.
Click Start, click Run, type "cmd" (without the quotation marks),
and then press ENTER to open a command prompt.

2. Type "<CD-ROM drive letter>:" (without the quotation marks), and
then press ENTER, where <CD-ROM drive letter> is the drive letter of
the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive in which the Windows XP CD-ROM is inserted.

3. Type "cd i386" (without the quotation marks), and then press ENTER.

4. Type "winnt32 /checkupgradeonly" (without the quotation marks), and
then press ENTER.

Good Luck,
