Someone has changed the system administrator settings on
my pc, my wife and I are still listed as adm. but cannot
install or uninstall certain programs due to the "must be
an adm." notification. After trying every other measure,
we are down to uninstalling and reinstalling xp home,
somhow during the move I have misplaced my cd's. I still
have the jacket for my xp home with key but no driver cd.
can I use someone elses xp with my key? then what would I
do about drivers?

Hi. If you installed SpyBot it probably locked the access to Tools in
Internet Explorer.
The same thing happened to me after Spybot updated itself. No one
believes I didn't set the locks myself. But anyway it is in the
advanced mode of Spybot. Here is what you do.
Open Spybot-Click Mode-Click Advanced-Click Yes-Click Settings, in
left-hand column-Click Tools in left-hand column-Click the Internet
Explorer Icon-Uncheck the last two lock boxes. Close. You may have to
restart for change to take effect, I don't remember for sure. Good
luck. Dingo

This is where the reserve, emergency account called Administrator comes
in. Hopefully the password for that has not been set. Boot, hitting F8
as BIOS info goes to black; take Safe Mode, There will then be an icon
for Administrator on the Welcome screen. (If not, hit CTL-ALT-DEL twice
and enter the explicit name
Administrator
and leave the password blank)

In that, Start - Run the line
control userpasswords2
where you can select any account name and Reset Password, and can also
click Properties and on the Group page use the Other pane to put the
account in the Administrators group

If it is a retail type CD you can borrow one of the same type (eg Home
Upgrade) and use with the key you have.
