BCM V2

B

Bob Day

I have Office 2003 and today I installed BCM v2 (v1 was installed, but never
used and probably never even enabled). But when I open Outlook, I don't see
BCM anywhere but in the folder list. I can add contacts and accounts, but
cannot link them.

I went to the BCM installation folder and ran "EnableBCM.exe" but it tells
me BCM is
already enabled. I tried "Detect and repair" option, no change.Reinstalled
BCM, still no change.

There was no Business Tools or folder list for BCM
- No disabled items option
- I checked data file management and there is a BCM MSQL FILE LISTED. In
services.msc and MSSQL$MICROSOFTSMLBIZ is listed as running (starts
automatically), but I do not see it under SQL Enterprise Manager.

This is on a stand alone lap top (not running exchange).

Anything ideas?
Bob.

Try removing the existing BCM database from the data file managment window
and addin a new one.You could aslo try creating a new profile in Outlook and
associating BCM with the same

This won't solve your problem, but here's some info that may help
diagnose problems.

BCM interanally is divided into two major components. A MAPI storage
provider and an Outlook Addin. It's the MAPI provider that supports the
BCM folder tree and stores the BCM items in sql server. The Addin
modifies the Outlook UI, adding menu items, toolbars, reports and the
BCM forms. One of them working and not the other indicates a serious
problem. At one point the Addin started, and installed the MAPI
provider in your Mail instance, but now won't start up when Outlook
loads the profile.

The reason SQL Enterprise Manager can't see the BCM instance is that
BCM turns off the default sql server service listening on a fixed udp
port. This service usually redirects incoming connections to the tcp
for specific server instances. The BCM instance is hardcoded to work
only with tcp port 56183. This is the same for SBA, and both apps
explain this somewhere in their help content. To connect sql tools to a
bcm instance you have to specify the port number by including it
following a commas after the host name.

Bob,

Fancy programming explanations aside, the bottom line is that your BCM
installation does not work and I suspect that rather than knowing all about
all of the reasons why this is, you probably just want to get your situation
rectified so that BCM will now work for you so that you can get on with its
use in your small business. My recommendation is to call Microsoft tech
support directly so that they may help you trouble shoot your way to a
resolution.
